Story
Katherine Buglione, an artist based in the Berkshires on the CT/MA border, explores the dynamic interplay between familiarity and peculiarity. Her artistic journey began in New York, where she was born in 1991, and led her to study Fine Arts at Fordham University [3], [2]. Buglione's work often navigates the space between tenderness and collapse, emphasizing the moment a narrative begins rather than its conclusion [17]. She channels these explorations into various mediums, including paint, pen, digital drawing, and animation [2].
Katherine Buglione was born in New York in 1991 [3]. Her artistic foundation was laid at Fordham University, where she pursued Fine Arts [3]. During her studies, Buglione found particular inspiration in the works of expressionist-era painters [2]. These influences, coupled with her own artistic vision, shaped her approach to art, which she describes as resistant to simple resolutions [2]. Her creative process focuses on uncovering the initial spark of a narrative, rather than dictating its end [2].
Katherine Buglione is a versatile artist who employs a range of mediums to express her artistic concepts. She works with traditional methods such as paint and pen, alongside modern techniques including digital drawing and animation [2]. This diverse approach allows her to explore themes of intimacy and estrangement, often focusing on portraiture not as a static representation but as a realm of distortion and vulnerability [2]. Her art consistently examines the tension between the ordinary and the uncanny [2].
The "Guest Check" series by Katherine Buglione emerged quite unexpectedly from her experiences working at a restaurant [2]. The initial collection, launched in 2022, was inspired by quick sketches of people she encountered during her shifts [2]. These preliminary drawings were then developed with greater detail and white paint [2]. A subsequent series in 2024 continued this exploration, featuring individuals observed in local restaurants and coffee shops, with descriptive notes often added to the back of the artwork [2].
Katherine Buglione's body of work includes several notable pieces that exemplify her artistic style. "Mercury Vapor," created in 2025, is an oil painting on stretched canvas measuring 18" x 36" x 1" [4]. Another oil on stretched canvas piece is "Web We Weave," also from 2025, with physical dimensions of 24" x 30" x 1" [5]. Additionally, "What We Hold" is a 30" x 24" x 1" oil painting on stretched canvas [6]. These works, alongside others, are part of her diverse portfolio [4], [5], [6].

These platforms allow for the creation and collection of her digital art [1], [2].
Katherine Buglione distinguishes herself within the contemporary art landscape through her deliberate focus on the tension between the ordinary and the uncanny, and her exploration of vulnerability in portraiture [2]. While many artists delve into digital mediums, Buglione maintains a strong foundation in traditional techniques like oil painting, often integrating them with digital art and animation [2]. Her "Guest Check" series, born from observational sketches in everyday settings, offers a unique blend of narrative art and social commentary, setting her apart from artists who might focus solely on abstract concepts or purely digital creations [2]. Her approach to storytelling, emphasizing the genesis of a narrative over its conclusion, provides a distinct perspective compared to artists who prioritize definitive messages or overarching themes in their work [2].
